Not every one has the time or ability to physically go and study for an MBA or other masters level qualification. Fortunately for those with family commitments or other considerations preventing attendance at a physical educational establishment, there are a wide range of online programs available.
How Much Will an Online MBA Program Cost?
It is difficult to speculate on the cost of an online MBA program, if only because fees range widely between schools, dependent on a number of factors including, reputation, quality of teaching and demand. However, in general terms an online MBA should not cost significantly more than a standard MBA at the same institution. In some cases there may be a small technology fee or other small fees associated with accessing online content.
In addition, the modular nature of taking online courses often means that students are able to pay course fees over a longer period, allowing students to undertake an MBA without access to a large initial investment.
The Advantages of an Online MBA Program
- Flexibility – The greatest advantage of the online program may be seen as that of flexibility. The lack of a fixed schedule of classes means that the online program is ideal for those with family and career commitments, but who still wish to study for an additional qualification.
- Choice – Since the online MBA will not require physical attendance of a school in most cases, this can lead to a far wider choice of programs. This is a significant advantage for those who wish to consider a specialist area offered at a limited number of institutions, as well as those who may look to study at a school outside of their own country or region.
- Cost – MBA programs are often expensive, many online programs are organized according to a modular system, often with payments being made on a module by module basis. As such, this allows many to study for an MBA who may struggle to find a large lump sum of money up front.
The Disadvantages of an Online MBA Program
- Motivation – While tutors will provide reading lists and recommended activities, a lack of a fixed schedule of classes and lectures means that those studying for an online qualification must find their own motivation to cover the necessary material each week.
- Community – While most online MBA programs will give students access to forums and weekly discussions, the sense of community on online program can be a little underwhelming. However, many students taking online course are often passionate about their subjects and places of work, community interaction can be gained but only if the student is willing to engage others on a regular basis.
- Resources – While lecturers will provide sufficient materials for students and there are usually only one or two core books to buy per module. Being located off campus means that a student will miss out on access to a wide range of both academic and social resources including, libraries and sports facilities.
As such, the online MBA program is great for those who are looking to balance the study of a high level academic qualification with work and family commitments, especially if the individual has a high level of discipline and passion for self study. If however, a person is more suited to a fixed structure of learning and the use of campus faculties is important, the online MBA may not be the right option.
