Looking for a single varietal, single estate bottling which will impress wine buffs and new hands alike? Try Dr Loosen 2010 Graacher Himmerlreich Kabinett.

Dr Loosen 2010 Graacher Himmerlreich is a single estate Riesling from the Mosel wine region of Germany. Like many wines from the region, the wine is produced from a single varietal, Riesling in this case, and is typically low in alcohol at just 7.5% by vol.

The wine is designated as a Kabinett and of the QMP quality level, making the wine of the highest quality on the market, but still maintaining the reasonable price level associated with Dr Loosen wines.

Dr Loosen 2010 Graacher Himmerlreich: Tasting Notes

  • Presentation - The wine is presented in a tall green bottle typical of German wines from the Mosel region. The label is an attractive traditional paper label with a pencil style sketch of the Loosen estate. As with many modern German wines, the bottle sealed with a standard screw cap with the collar bearing a suitable Germanic eagle. This particular bottle comes in a standard 75cl bottling and cost £11.99 from Sainsbury’s supermarkets.

  • Appearance - The wine is a pale straw yellow color with a slight sparkle when first poured into the glass.

  • Nose - The nose is dominated by fresh lemons and citrus and very slight hints of both petrol and mineral notes typical of wine from the Mosel region.

  • Palate - The palate, like the appearance, has an ever so slight sparkle giving the wine an almost “sherbet lemon” quality. Other notes on the palate include the sharpness of green apple and a slightly citrus after note. The wine is well-balanced with acidity, without having too much, and the low levels of alcohol make for a smooth and fast drinking wine.
As with many good quality German wines, the wine tastes sweet at first, however, a few sips later and the tannins begin to show through giving a wine which is drier than first expected. The wine also evolves over time, the sparkling edge giving way over time to a more creamy textured wine.

The wine is definitely a “fun” wine and makes an excellent pair with Asian foods. This is always a personal favorite paired with green curry or other spicy dishes from the region.

Overall, this is a fantastic way to experience high quality German wine without breaking the bank. The wine is aslo available in a wide range of outlets. While the wine is more expensive than the generic offerings from Dr Loosen, the additional complexity definitely makes the Graacher Himmelreich bottling worth the few extra pounds.
