A wine review and tasting notes for Taylor's late bottled vintage port 2004.

If looking for a bottle of port with some of the characteristics of a good quality vintage port but not wishing to commit to the time and budget required to enjoy a bottle of vintage port, then a bottle of late bottled vintage port or LBV port may be the answer.

Taylor’s LBV Port 2004: The Wine

Here Taylor’s have created a late bottled vintage port made from grapes of the 2004 vintage which have been bottle for consumption in 2010. The wine is produced from a single harvest at the Quinta Vinbos SA, Oporto and sold under the Taylor’s brand.

The port has standard alcoholic content of 20% by volume, although the high fruit drive of the wine sees that such a high level of alcohol in relation to non-fortified wines is not unpleasant or even noticeable to an extent.

Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2004: Tasting Notes

  • Price – A standard 75cl bottle was purchased for £9.99 on this occasion from Tesco Supermarkets.

  • Presentation – The bottle is presented in a standard dark brown Bordeaux style bottle which is embossed with the Taylor’s crest on the front. The bottle is sealed with a plastic stopper and natural cork which can be removed with a pulling action.

  • Appearance – The wine is a deep purple color with brick tawny hues around the edge. On swirling in the glass, the port stands and its legs for a significant amount of time betraying the sweetness of the drink.

  • Nose – The nose is extremely fruity with cherries and plums dominating the nose. There is a little warmth in the nose but little else by the way of complexity.

  • Palate – The palate is a again a simple one, the port has a good dose of black cherry and plum with a little tobacco and some liquorice present on the finish. The port is a smooth one and well made with the right balance between sweetness and power.

  • Summary – Taylor’s late bottled vintage 2004 is a good port but not a brilliant one. The port is a simple well made wine suitable for beginners or those looking for a wine which does not required a great deal of thinking about. The port does however lack the complexity of many better ports available at this price level.
Buy this wine if looking for an inexpensive all rounder to share with those who have a limited knowledge of port or are just looking to relax. However, if a serious bottle of port required then this is not the bottle to go for.
