Wiese and Krohn was founded by Theordor Wiese and Dankert Krohn in 1865. Unlike many of the famous producers of port today, which have an English association. Wiese and Krohn specialised in the export of port to the Danish and Scandinavian market.
Today Wiese and Krohn occupy the estate Quinta do Retiro in the Douro region of Portugal. The company holds around five million litres of port at any one time, stored in six callers in the Vila Nova de Gaia. 90% of Wiese and Krohn’s production is still exported to the traditional European market.
Wiese and Krohn opens its doors to visitors to Portugal, offering a free tasting and tour between the hours of 10:00 and 20:00 daily throughout the summer. The establishment is closed for the winter in the months of December and January.
Wiese and Krohn’s Ports
Wiese and Krohn splits its production down into two categories: dated and undated ports. The port reviewed here is an undated port however, the blend is made from a selection of ports of around 20 years of age.
Wiese and Krohn’s undated tawny ports are available in 10, 20 and 30 year undated age brackets. The port under review, the Krohn 20 year old tawny has won a number of awards including a gold medal at the Wine Masters Challenge 2009.
Wiese and Krohn 20 Year Tawney Port Tasting Notes
Presentation – The wine is presented in an elegant traditional port style bottle. The bottle is made of frosted green glass and slightly “bell shaped”. The bottle is closed with a plastic cap and attached cork stopper, as such a cork screw is not required for opening. The bottle is finished with a traditional white lettering, in addition the bottle proudly displays a label proclaiming the gold medal earned at the Wine Masters Challenge 2009.
- Colour – The wine has a typical reddish brown tawny hue associated with a traditional aged tawny style port.
- Nose – The nose is decidedly strong, a strong “rum and raisin” fills the room as soon as the bottle is uncorked. Once poured into the glass the port has a nose of vanilla, ice cream and raisins. Overall the nose has a distinct sweet, dessert like quality.
- Palate – After the nose, the expectation of the palate is one of sweetness. However, what is delivered is something quite different. The port is somewhat spicy with deep earthy notes. Again the palate also has a large dose of raisin present. Overall the pallet is quite complex and keeps the drinker guessing at the elements for an extended period of time.
- Summary – Overall Weiese and Krohn’s 20 year old tawny port is a port of real distinction within its class. The port is one with a greater level of power than many of its rivals, and certainly one with a much lower level of sweetness. The real selling point of this port is the complexity of the pallet, the wine keeps the drinker guessing as to put names to the earthy notes experienced in the wines drinking.
